Jack
Jack
Jack, her faithful dog,
Passed away last Sunday
Now she’s all alone again
Seen not a soul since Monday.
Jack was her only friend
Her only kith and kin
Her companion through the day
Her guardian in the evening.
Now that she’s retired
She hardly ever leaves
Her modest house atop the hill
To meet the village people.
Her privacy respected
No nosey neighbors prying
More’s the pity, more’s the shame
That no one even tries.
Man has never known a friend
As faithful as her collie
Loyal, kind and loving
Above mere human giving.
A pet that let her show her love
In a way that humans couldn’t
A friend that brought out all the best
Where she found her true self.
Now Jack’s gone and what remains
Is grief that finds no expression
No one to share her lonely pain
No way to end depression.
A loyal dog is man’s best friend
Until his short life is ended
When we are left adrift, uncertain
Should we exhale and start again?
